FAQ
- What kind of work could I be doing?
- Retail is a diverse sector, and once you’re in, it’s common to move around. You could be finding new products and developing ranges as a buyer, designing product displays as a visual merchandiser or managing a store. Careers in FMCG cover a lot of the same territory – you could become a brand manager, work in manufacturing or become a quality control officer. All sales jobs are essentially about selling something; the choice comes when picking what to sell. From selling advertising space in media sales to the target driven world of the sales executive, the options are wide.
- What are the salaries like?
- Most graduates in retail will earn over £20,000 but it’s not unknown to go in at over £30,000. If you’re ambitious and creative, there are real opportunities to climb the ladder fast and increase your earning power. Store managers can earn up to £75,000 and if it’s buying you fancy, then you could be looking at £50,000 once you’re experienced. The perks are also worth having; expect a good pension, staff discount and bonus. The great thing about sales is often your earnings are down to you. Work hard, sell more and boost your salary accordingly. Graduate salaries range from around £15,000 to £21,000 and there’s usually commission on top. The average salary for those in management is £35,000 plus bonuses. Be careful when applying for positions in this sector; if a role advertises an OTE salary (on-target-earnings) it will be dependent on you meeting targets.
- What’s it like to work in these sectors?
- Whether you opt for retail, FMCG or sales, the culture will be commercial so you’ll be expected to work hard and probably to meet targets. Because these areas are so fast-paced, they require a flexible attitude – you could be needed outside of your normal work hours or asked to travel at short notice. Of course, the dynamism of these sectors is also their draw. You’ll be kept on your toes and it’s unlikely you’ll ever be bored.
