FAQ

Which areas are covered by the Public Sector?
A summary of the UK's largest employer would need to include the following broad areas: Local and central government, health and care, education, the emergency, armed and civil services, charities and not for profit, arts, leisure and tourism.
What kind of graduate programmes are on offer?
The Civil Service run a Fast Stream programme designed to prepare graduates quickly for senior management. There are specialist Fast Streams for economists, statisiticians and those with a background in business technology in addition to the general graduate scheme. You’ll need at least a 2.2 and competition is very steep. Some government departments, including HM Revenue and the Customs and Defence Engineering and Science Group, also offer graduate recruitment schemes. If you’re interested in a particular department, visit its website to see if they offer a graduate route in.
What's it’s like to work in the Public Sector?
If you’d like stable and secure employment, opportunities for continuous professional development and a job that impacts upon everyone’s lives, you’ll find all this in the Public Sector. However, it can be criticised for its amount of red tape which can make decision making slow and frustrating. You can expect to work decent hours, a culture of flexible working and generous holiday.
