FAQ
- What are the benefits of getting onto a graduate scheme?
- If you’re smart and talented, this is the way to fast-track your career. If you’re not sure it’s worth the effort, read on… • It will put you on the right path for roles in senior management • You’ll learn quickly in a supportive environment • You‘ll build a professional network which will come in useful later • Your employer may pay for you to get a professional qualification
- What kind of candidates are companies interested in?
- Although it will depend on the company you approach and the type of career you’re pursuing, there are certain inescapable traits graduates should be able to demonstrate: • An in-depth knowledge and understanding of the company and/or job role • Ambition, drive and determination • Team skills and a willingness to take on responsibility • Commercial awareness and the potential to be a future business leader
- Who offers graduate training?
- Although the bad news is places on graduate schemes are down 25% on last year, there are companies who remain committed and are worth targeting. Tesco, Boots and Marks & Spencer have all pledged to continue with their programmes as normal. Representing the finance sector, both Deloitte and PricewaterhouseCoopers have no plans to cut back. In retail, Sainsbury’s have upped places by 30% and if you’re interest in management, Aldi’s scheme has 50% more places on offer than last year. And of course, all of our exhibitors offer opportunities specially tailored to graduates.
- Is a graduate training programme right for me?
- A graduate scheme will give you thorough and structured training to get you climbing the career ladder fast. They can be great for those who have picked a sector or company but want to explore the opportunities before settling on a role. However, these programmes can be a real commitment - don’t apply unless you are focused and serious about your career, or you’re very likely to drop out. Expect an intense learning experience and constant scrutiny. Free spirits who prefer to find their own way should consider alternative ways in.
