FAQ
- What's it like working in financial or professional services?
- Although the rewards are undeniably high, be prepared for long hours and lots of hard work. A career in these sectors can eat into your social life and you’re likely to need to study for various professional qualifications. When you’re deciding which employers you’d like to apply for, find out if they offer flexible working or have implemented any other initiatives to set the work/life balance right.
- How do I know if finance or professional services is for me?
- It’s a good idea to do some work experience before you apply. Not only will this give you a taster of what’s to come, it will look brilliant on your CV. Most companies will offer a formal work placement scheme, often held during the summer months only. You should aim to do your placements before going into your final year to give you time to make a decision before the graduate programme application deadlines start to loom. Be aware that many graduate internships are considered part of the overall recruitment process and so competition for places is steep.
- What kind of work could I be doing and who might I work for?
- Finance covers a vast range of jobs and potential employees. From high street banks, consultancies and insurance firms to less likely suspects who offer finance as part of their business (think Tesco Finance for example), there are plenty of opportunities out there to explore. The area of Professional services is broader still. Any contractor or consultant can be included in this group - accountants, architects, solicitors and brokers to name just a few. Speak to company representatives at GradU8 to find out what they can offer or search for finance and professional services jobson the Graduate zone.
- Which degrees are employers interested in?
- Employers in finance and professional services will usually consider any graduate with a good degree as you’ll be trained up on the job. It shouldn’t matter what you chose to study if you’ve done well – a solid result demonstrates commitment, ability and potential. For certain roles a business or finance degree and good levels of numeracy will be required however.
