FAQ
- I’ve applied for lots of graduate jobs but never hear anything back. Why do you think I'm getting no response?
- Graduate recruiters can look at hundreds of CVs every day so they won’t always have time to reply to every single one. Most reputable recruiters will have a statement letting you know that you might only hear back if your CV is successful. Try calling the recruiter a short while after you’ve submitted your CV and asking for feedback. Recruiters are not legally bound to provide feedback so a polite approach will be crucial.
- How can I prepare for an assessment centre?
- Assessment centres are designed to judge how well you react to various situations and measure your suitability for the role you are applying for. Most use some form of psychometric testing as well as verbal and numerical reasoning tests, for which you can prepare in advanced - try our free psychometric test and visit www.shlgroup.com for other types of test.
- What’s the best way to prepare for a job interview?
- Do your research. Look up the company website plus any other press releases about them. Prepare questions about the company and the role you’re going for. It's also a good idea to line up some questions for your interviewer about their own experience of working for the company. Decide in advance what you are going to wear and always dress professionally, even if the company is dress-down. Before you leave the house, print out a map and the contact details of your interviewer so you can phone ahead if there are any problems.
- What’s the most common reason a recruiter will reject a graduate CV?
- CVs are most commonly rejected when they can’t be easily scanned for the relevant information. Other major turn-offs are waffle, spelling mistakes, and comedy email addresses. It's recommended you lock down any social networking profiles so they can’t be viewed for incriminating material too.
- I have no work experience so what can I include in my application?
- Graduates aren’t necessarily expected to have work experience; you just need to demonstrate that you have the attributes asked for in the job description. You will have gained transferable skills from the elements required to complete your degree, such as delivering presentations and project work. Don't forget extra-curricular activities are relevant too - teamwork, communication and leadership skills can often be illustrated by these.
